Coming up – like a flower!

I’m hoping for success with growing pansies from seed collected from spent flowers, planted into homemade compost. I’ll let you know how it goes.

In early October I gathered a few seeds from pansy flowers that had finished blooming and set seed – and quickly chucked them into a little pot. A few weeks later I noticed they had germinated.

A few days after that I popped down to the compost pile to get some soil into little seed trays so I could pot them on.

Here they are before ‘pricking out’ – I gently emptied the whole pot into a small dish, and then used chopsticks to delicately separate the seedlings and put each into it’s own little space.

Here they are a couple of days ago, it seems most of them have survived the move…

And here they are when I last checked on them, looking spooky in the dark, but mostly alive and well.

The little one on the left, with a twist and open arms is my favourite…

Here’s a few tips for your compost.

I hope your plans and plants are growing nicely.

    1. I’ve gone in waves of enthusiasm, over-reach and disappointment with seed sowing in the past – but I’ve started to get familar with a few seeds that seem to work for me in this garden. Sweetpeas, nasturtium and acorns are probably my favourites. And I’m really enjoying collecting seeds this year, although I think I gather far more than I can plant.

And yes, the little one is definitely having a bit of a boogie. 🙂

  1. It might be interesting to see how similar they are to the original parents. They are so extensively bred that genetic variation is more likely than not, but who knows?

    1. I hope that they make it through the winter and flower next year – and I’ll let you know how they go. I don’t think I’ve grown pansies from seed before so this will be a bit of an experiment for me. 🙂
