Six on Sat, 23 Nov 24, hydrangea, frost, and an owl at the lantern parade

At this time of year the garden is settling in for winter. We had the first frost this week, and only the hydrangeas are still in bloom. This Saturday’s collection has hydrangea, a frosty lawn, cyclamen, Vanessa Bell rose, the pergola ‘naked’ with all the leaves gone, and a teeny bellflower flower looking vibrant against an orange leaf. Plus an owl and a bluebell…

Six on Saturday is a thing where garden bloggers share six highlights from their garden on a Saturday. It’s hosted by Jim at Garden Ruminations, and shared on the hashtag #SixOnSaturday across social media. I’ve given up on twitter, but you’ll find me at BlueSky as jen-m-a-c

Hydrangea ‘Thingummy’ is a beautiful flower, that was planted in the front garden by a previous occupant.

The frost has finished off most of the tender perennials, and the pond has iced over for the first time this season.

The Cyclamen sits atop a pot planted with spring bulbs for next year. Hopefully this will be a bright spot this spring.

The Vanessa Bell rosebuds have a lovely translucence after the frost.

The leaves are mostly gone from the grapes and wisteria that grow on the pergola, and the sun shines through the beams pleasingly.

I’m gonna sneak in a non-garden picture, because this is my blog and I’ll do what I want with it… 🙂

Here’s a snapshot from last night’s Lantern Parade in my hometown of Frome. There were hundreds of people carrying home made lanterns on the theme of ‘wildlife.’ The parade were processing with a samba band, to meet Father Christmas and the Mayor of Frome in the town centre and switch on the Christmas Tree lights. It was a fantastic event, with some amazing creations. The owl and the bluebell were my favourites.

We have visiting family and a wet weekend ahead, so we might be watching films and playing board games.

I hope that whatever you’re up to you have a super weekend.

Jen x

    1. I’m not sure I enjoy it, but it’s what I’m used to here in the UK. The winters can be cold and wet. But I would not enjoy a very hot climate for long, I tend to burn, wilt and overheat in hot weather and seek out the shady spots 🙂

      1. I find hot climates to be as fascinating as cold climates because I do not like when it gets warm here for a day or so. I can not imagine much hotter weather that lasts for most or all of the summer. The climate here may be boring, and limiting to species that do not need much chill, but it is what I am accustomed to, and I should appreciate it more.
