Horse chestnut, Gertrude, wisteria, pansy, sweetpea feathervane and turkish sage

Here’s a selection of garden highlights for Six on Saturday, where bloggers share what’s growing on in their gardens.

Horse chestnut saplings in cute little bonsai pots, sitting in the old cast iron fire basket. I’m not sure these little pots will be suitable homes for them for more than a month or two. The care required to make them into amazing bonsai like the ones shown in this horse chestnut bonsai masterclass might be a bit ambitious for me, but I will try to keep them alive.

The next selection is Gertrude Jekyll rose, which has just started flowering against the side fence.

The wisteria is wonderful, hopefully it has a couple more weeks of flower still to come

The pansies I grew from seeds collected last year are flowering in similar colours to their parents. I’m surprised by how well these have done, and will try to make time to collect seeds to grow pansies again later this year. It’s quite satisfying to reuse the plastic pots that they came in to make new generation of ‘free plants.’

I greatly enjoyed making sweetpea towers last weekend, using willow stems and hoops. The seedlings in the pot on the steps have started to come up, so that little pansy doesn’t look so lonesome anymore. there are now three sweetpea towers around the garden, the one closest to the door is the neatest, and it is topped by a ‘feathervane’ to catch the breeze.

You can make your own feather vane with an old pen, some sticks, wire and string. This one features a goose feather we gathered from Chew Valley last year. It’s lovely when it catches the sunshine.

My final selection is this Turkish sage cutting, taken accidentally from its parent during over enthusiastic weeding. I accidentaly pulled a small clump with roots away, so thought that I might as well plant it, and get some more of this smashing plant. So far, so good, this littlun is perky and hopefully will settle into it’s new home nicely.

I hope you have a good week.

  1. All wonderful, as ever. I’m inspired to collect pansy seeds! What is Turkish sage? New to me — does it have nice flowers as well as flavour?

  2. Bonsai horse chestnut – I would never have thought about that one! Interesting! I had a Cornus alternifolia pop up in my garden and thought about trying my hand at Bonsai. Over winter it got the Bun-sai treatment when the local rabbits took it down by 2/3. It is putting on leaves, so who knows? It will be interesting to see the progress of the horse chestnuts.

  3. Great selections (and photos!) for your “Six”! That Rose–wow! I hope you will have more luck with Horse Chestnut than I have had. Over the years I’ve found several in the garden, and potted them…which is where I should have kept them. Great idea to try the bonsai technique. When I’ve placed them in the ground, the rabbits ate them. 🙁

  4. I love your Sweetpea supports but the Wisteria plus cat is the winner this week.
