Collage of garden images, including rose, clematis, hydrangea and primrose

Dancing pixies, pirouette, clematis, mown-a-meadow, hydrangea and primrose

This week’s selection for Six on Saturday

Six on Saturday is a hobby that got out of hand, where gardeners from around the world share six things from the garden. Join the fun at https://gardenruminations.co.uk/

We had guests this week, and our visitors kindly took us shopping at the delightful Lakeside garden centre in Crockerton, near Warminster. Thanks Mandy and Graham!

I chose this delightful plant with little white flowers that flutter in the breeze, which looks great in the front garden. Saxifraga dancing pixies thea

My next selection for six on Sat was another gift for the garden- this beautiful rose called pirouette, which is known for winter flower, and was a gift from my brother and sister in law.

Next up a second flush of clematis flowers, from the established plant at the front of our house. I don’t know what variety this is, but it looks like Clematis-warszawska-nike It bloomed in the summer, then stopped during the drought in August, and has put out more flowers since the heavy rains we had in September.

My 4th pick is the freshly mown wildflower meadow, which one man went to mow this week. That strip in the middle of this picture may not look like much now, but it’s full of seeds and bugs and overwintering critters all tucked up for the winter ahead.

Next up, another new plant – this hydrangea, with the somewhat silly name ‘Pinky-winky’ which we’ll overlook because it’s got beautiful foliage, flowers and form.

And finally a common primrose, a volunteer seedling that I spotted and my lovely husband popped into a pot with some strawberry runners, and has sprung into bloom already.

I really could go on, and so I’m going to share another gallery of autumn colours, with some photos from the community orchard that we helped to plant at Weylands, with unworldly colours from autumn sunshine, and some lovely little apples. About seven or eight years ago I was part of a small gathering with ‘The Tree Group’ discussing planting plans for this spot by the river. In March 2019 Shared Earth Learning, The Tree Group, and Frome Town Council hosted a tree planting day.

And now, there’s apples.

Today we’re planning a mission to get a few more bulbs… there’s always room for a few more.

I’ll be collecting more acorns and tree seeds as I see them. This year was a mast year so there’s plenty around – but its likely that there’ll be far fewer seeds next year as the trees regain their reserves of energy and resources.

Have a lovely week

  1. Nice selections! The rose reminds me of tissue paper roses we used to make as kids. Drove my mother crazy, as we were using up all the facial tissues in the house for our project!

  2. Clematis ‘Warszawska-Nike’ sure is pretty. We grow no more of the large flowering clematis. They do not perform so well with arid warmth here.

  3. Well, I was going to say that I love the Saxifraga. But then each item you’ve shared was wonderful. The Rose…magical. The Clematis…what a beautiful color! The meadow…what a special place. The Hydrangea…love the shade and the form. The Primrose with Strawberries…nifty! And then the Apples…yum! Enjoy!

  4. I went to a talk about hydrangeas yesterday and Pinky Winky got an honorable mention and looked amazing on the succession of slides he showed, at monthly intervals in summer. But we have three Hydrangea paniculatas already, don’t want more, couldn’t choose one to replace. Eternal dilemma.
