It’s a six on Saturday selection from a garden in Frome, Somerset UK.
There’s lots going on and many garden highlits to choose from for this week’s Six on Saturday, and not a lot of time as I want to get going to get even more plants into the garden today 🙂

First up, the tulips, and daffodils are looking fabulous. Each year we plant more spring bulbs, and each spring we want even more next year. I love to have the cut flowers in the house.
This huge and frilly ‘narcissus replete’ is one of the highlights, it is a ridiculous big blousy bloom.

Next up is our blackbird friend. This brave fellow follows husband as he gardens, getting all the best worms. The lawn had its first mow this week, and early this morning the blackbird got a juicy worm.

Spring is officially here, and today’s the equinox. It’s so great to hear the birdsong and enjoy more hours of daylight and sunshine. It’s not my favourite time of year when the sun sets at three thirty pm.
Noteable birds this week identified by the Merlin bird song app include Siskin and Green woodpecker. There are blackcaps and chiffchaffs, robins, blackbirds and sparrows making themselves heard.
One of the highlights of the season is when the sunshine reaches the solar panel and the fountain in the pond starts to bubble. Husband and I visited the Tool Shed to refresh the solar battery in the pump, and with a bit of skillfull tinkering by lovely husband the fountain is back in action for the spring, summer and autumn.
It’s bliss to watch the ripples on the pond.

Out front, our neighbour’s marvellous magnolia blooms magnificently. It was a very pretty sight at sunrise this morning. And our potted olive has survived another winter, as has it’s big pot.

And finally for this week’s ‘six’ a project – the one we’re popping out to purchase further supplies for later this morning. The ongoing challenge of this north-facing hilly garden is to stop most of it sliding down hill. So slowly, ‘we’ are adding terraces and walls to make planting pockets. This one is an extension to the rose bed, with a little stone wall lovingly made by my lovely husband.

It is a work in progress, and looking at this photo reminds me that the back wall of the house is in a right state and we need to get that sorted soon.
But first, look at at all that lovely garden space ready for planting! Look at that lovely stone wall!
We’re going to add some manure, some roses, and some (yet to be decided) companion planting – perhaps evergreeen shrubbery at the top?
So I’m going to wrap up this week’s blog, and point to to Jim ‘King of Cameilas’ Garden ruminations blog, where he hosts this ‘Six on Saturday’ meme for garden joy. His stunning camlia collection was on Gardener’s World last night, it was lovely but slightly bizarre to see him on TV!
Have a lovely week
Jen xx
Lots of lovely blooms already and lots of potential for even more in your new beds. I love this time of year, so full of hope.
So many lovely flowers and so much potential in your new project, I look forward to seeing that develop over the next few months/years.
That looks like an exciting new project. I’m a bit envious of all that space for new plants… and the impressive dry stone wall. Love the blackbird photo.
If you thought it was bizarre to see me on the telly, imagine what it was like for me. Very weird.
What nice tulips. That magnolia next door is rad also. Is it Magnolia lennei ‘Alba’?
That’s so interesting about the terracing you’re creating. We have the same problem, so we need to find a solution. So far, we’re planning on planting a row of grasses, but we may need to do some terracing, too. Your stone wall is lovely and fits in well with its surroundings.
